Summary

 

The position is stationed at the Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley Courthouse, West Palm Beach, Florida. T ravel to courthouse branches may be required. 

 

SALARY: $49,442.10(annual salary of $47,040.06 plus competitive area differential pay of $2,402.04) .

 

The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide administrative aid and support to the Judiciary in the managing, monitoring, and coordinating of Domestic Violence cases. This position is responsible for developing and employing effective case management procedures that assist with the identification and coordination of Unified Family Court. The position is responsible for assisting Domestic Violence Judges with respect to substantive and procedural legal issues related to Domestic Violence cases. The position also provides in-court assistance to Domestic Violence Judges at Permanent Injunction hearings, motion calendars, and civil contempt/compliance/criminal contempt calendars, held at the Daniel T.K. Hurley Courthouse, West Palm Beach, and the North and South court locations. The position is responsible for providing case information to pro se litigants and system staff, case coordination and referrals to community-based services, managing and preparing cases for court hearings and briefing judges, attending hearings, scheduling hearings, and performing related clerical functions. The position acts as liaison between the judiciary, the clerk of court staff, community-based service groups, and the parties and their attorneys involved in Domestic Violence cases. The goal is to provide litigants with maximum access to the courts and associated services. The position works under the direct supervision of the Family Court Operations Manager.

 

Examples of Work Performed

 

  • Provides court case management, case monitoring, program implementation and other assistance to the judiciary and general magistrates of the Unified Family Court Division.
  • Screens and identifies possible cases for Unified Family Court, monitors the movement of court cases from point of initiation to disposition; exercises independent judgment and initiative. 
  • Manages and prepares cases for court hearings by reviewing pleadings; researches and provides corresponding case information and other documentation pertinent to the case and/or litigants.
  • Attends and assists Judges in injunction for protection hearings by drafting appropriate orders based on judicial rulings, performs criminal background checks, works with parties to arrange parenting plans or time-sharing, and calculates child support
  • Schedules hearings by determining case status; prepares appropriate court orders or correspondence based on the judicial ruling
  • Provides referrals to appropriate community agencies 
  • Performs administrative tasks, such as preparing orders, documents, forms and correspondence; monitors and provides social service provider lists to litigants; and creates and maintains record systems for efficient case management 
  • Assists self-represented litigants with case status and procedural information in accordance with rules of family and civil procedures, related laws and statutes 
  • Researches case histories, compiles statistical data, attends court, schedules mandatory case conferences 
  • Travels to different courthouses located in Palm Beach County, as needed 
  • Other duties assigned by the Family Court Manager, Judges, or Chief Deputy Court Administrator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration, Psychology, Sociology or closely related field and three (3) years of experience working in a business or court setting.

 

Relevant experience and/or education may substitute for the recommended minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis.

  • Paralegal studies/degree/legal secretaries

 

  KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Working knowledge of laws, court rules, procedures and policies, legal documents, and legal factors pertaining to the court of assignment,  especially in family law proceedings
  • Knowledge of the organization, operation, function, and jurisdiction of the court of assignment
  • Knowledge of the calendaring procedures in the court of assignment and of modern techniques of case management
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, orally and through presentations
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to make work decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to accurately maintain a variety of complex records
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the judiciary, court administration personnel, and other private and public agency staff
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and recognize and establish work priorities
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with integrity and confidentiality
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including personal computers and word processing and data entry applications for case management
  • Ability to work effectively with the public and handle individuals who are under stress with courtesy, tact and patience
