Independent Claims Adjuster

Job Type: Full-time

Work Location: In person – Houston, Texas (North side)

Pay: Depends on Experience; Negotiable

• 40-hour work weeks, 8 hours per day Monday-Friday
• Occasional after hour call outs during work week
• Occasional call outs during weekend

As independent adjusters, we handle a variety of claims including marine and energy, inland marine, cargo, contractor’s equipment, piers and wharves, casualty, commercial general liability, as well as many other types of claims. We also offer third-party administration services to companies in the marine and energy sector.

About the Candidate

The successful candidate will be a high performing Claims Professional that is customer focused, willing to work in a fast-paced environment, able to perform their job requirements in an independent manner and accepts responsibility for their own results and those of their team.

Only those candidates that currently hold a valid Texas resident Adjuster’s License and have a minimum of two (2) years of claims adjusting experience will be considered.

Job Summary

This role is responsible for the investigation, administration, and settlement of complex liability and property claims. This person must perform coverage, liability and damage analysis, maintain timely correspondence and determine the best course of action with a high level of autonomy, while working closely with clients, their employees and attorneys as a seasoned claims expert.

Responsibilities

• Manage assigned caseload of claims with minimal oversight.
• Investigate new claims and initiate timely contact with clients, their employees, claimants and legal counsel to determine appropriate actions to be taken.
• Properly evaluate liability, damages, and make recommendations for claim handling and reserves.
• Negotiate settlements with claimants and attorneys.
• Report to clients and carriers regarding claim status and follow through on recommended actions.
• Refer claims to defense counsel, remaining directly involved in litigation claims management to reach desired outcomes and minimize expenses.
• Remain in direct compliance with company policies and procedures.
• Occasional travel to perform on scene investigations.
• Occasional travel to attend mediations and other required proceedings.
• Maintain active adjuster license in states where this is required.
• Maintain valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.
• Ability to utilize Windows-based claims systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• Occasional travel to meet with clients and account management to conduct claim reviews to present cost reports, reserves, active claims and settlement recommendations.
• Serve assigned clients as an experienced claims consultant.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Perform continuing education as required.
• Maintain valid Adjuster’s License.

• Experience with medical terminology is essential.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent customer service and telephone skills.
• Meet company background hiring standards.
• Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment under general management direction to complete assignments.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, etc.) is essential.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to issue written reports in a cohesive manner is essential.

Requirements for Consideration

• Currently hold a valid Texas Adjuster’s License.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience handling claims is preferred.
• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree is preferred, but not required.
• Experience investigating claims in the marine, longshore, or worker’s compensation field is a plus, but not required.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
• Currently hold or ability to obtain a TWIC card.
• Ability to drive an automobile, board vessels, attend accident scene inspections, and perform investigations in marine environments.
• Bilingual capability (English/Spanish) is a plus but not required.
