Job Summary:

The Coordinator of Student Orchestras will oversee the PK-8 music program at Conservatory Lab Charter School, providing leadership and supervision for music staff while refining and enhancing the school’s orchestral curriculum. This position plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall music education experience for students, creating performance opportunities, and strengthening connections with the community. In addition to managing the orchestral program, the Coordinator will collaborate closely with the leadership team, support day-to-day school operations, manage student data, and engage in family outreach to ensure a holistic approach to student success. The ideal candidate will have experience leading youth orchestras, working with a diverse student body, and demonstrating a commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervision & Leadership

  • Supervise and coach music staff to deliver high-quality orchestral instruction.

  • Lead professional development sessions and collaborate with staff to advance individual and collective teaching practices.

  • Mentor music staff, fostering a supportive and professional learning environment for ongoing development.

Curriculum Development, Instruction, and Assessment:

  • Guide the music staff in reviewing, revising, and implementing a comprehensive orchestral curriculum that aligns with PK-8 student needs.

  • Ensure that the curriculum supports the development of well-rounded musicianship and artistry, with attention to the diversity of the student body.

  • Partner with academic staff to integrate music education with core subjects, fostering interdisciplinary learning experiences that enrich the overall educational experience for students.

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure alignment between music education and broader school initiatives.

  • Support music staff in regularly assessing student progress and adjusting instructional approaches based on data and feedback.

  • Collect, analyze, and manage student performance data to track growth, identify areas for improvement, and ensure the effectiveness of the music program.

  • Participate in school-wide data review processes, helping to guide the school’s strategies for student achievement and success.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with music staff to identify and coordinate student performances, including school concerts, community events, and collaborative performances with local music organizations.

  • Engage with families to share information about student progress, upcoming performances, and music program initiatives.

  • Provide opportunities for families to get involved in the music program through events, volunteer opportunities, and other forms of engagement.

  • Establish relationships with local music organizations and stakeholders to create performance opportunities and mentorship platforms for students.

  • Engage with local and regional music communities to promote Conservatory Lab’s music program and its student achievements.

  • Build and maintain relationships with local universities, music schools, and other community organizations to offer students additional performance opportunities, mentorship, and resources.

Diversity & Inclusion

  • Ensure that all music programming is culturally responsive, accessible, and inclusive, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the student body.

  • Foster an environment where students from all backgrounds feel valued and are encouraged to express themselves through music.

Orchestra Coordination and Direction

  • Guide music staff in the coordination and direction of school orchestras across instrument groups and grade levels, selecting age-appropriate, cohesive, and challenging repertoire.

  • Support and occasionally lead rehearsals and assist with sectional rehearsals to ensure balanced ensemble performance and student growth.

  • Provide leadership to music staff in offering individual and group coaching to foster technical and musical growth.

  • Encourage students’ personal and artistic development while maintaining high standards of excellence.

School Operations

  • Support the daily operations of the school as part of the leadership team, including contributing to school-wide planning, communication, and decision-making.

  • Assist in maintaining a positive school culture that reflects the school’s values and mission.

  • Supervise the maintenance, care, and distribution of school-owned/rented instruments and materials, and ensure students have access to necessary tools for their growth.

  • Collaborate with families and staff to encourage at-home practice and responsible instrument care.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Complete any other tasks as assigned by the Principal, Executive Director, or their designee.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music Education, Orchestral Conducting, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience leading youth orchestras.

  • Minimum 2 years experience supervising staff

  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse student populations.

  • Strong knowledge of pedagogy and repertoire suitable for PK-8 students, including strings, winds, brass, and early childhood music.

  • Experience in an urban educational setting is preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Passion for music education and commitment to fostering student success.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, families, and community partners.

Preferred:

  • Experience in leading and mentoring music staff in a school or community-based setting.

  • Familiarity with El Sistema-inspired music programs and interdisciplinary teaching approaches.
