Job title: Mental Performance Coach / Mental Health Counselor Job classification: Part Time, academic year / 15 hours/week/32 weeks Reports to: Director of Counseling and Psychological Services Salary Range: $18,000 - $22,000 The Mental Performance Coach / Counselor is a part time, 15-hour/week, academic-year employee responsible for providing direct therapeutic support and counseling services to students in addition to providing specialized counseling and community education related to performance. This person will work collaboratively as part of the Counseling and Psychological Services team as well as with the Athletic and Performing Arts Departments. Responsibilities Manage an individual caseload of students needing short term counseling. Is available to respond to students' emotional and mental health crises and provide crisis intervention in collaboration with the Director of Counseling & Psychological Services both during the school day and when on call. Provide group counseling as needed. Maintain electronic case notes and other documentation via Magnus in an appropriate and timely manner as required by state law and CAPS policies and procedures Engage, communicate and collaborate with parents, faculty, administration and other professionals as appropriate Develop and implement programming that provides students with information related to performance and provides faculty/coaches the training they need to support the programming. Develop mental strategies that enable students to overcome setbacks and improve resilience Work with athletic teams to develop strategies for managing anxiety, building confidence, and maintaining motivation Work with team captains to help them provide effective, positive leadership on our athletic teams. Identify mental strengths and weaknesses that contribute to a student's performance. Collaborate with athletic trainers, physical therapists, and others to support athletes who have endured sports injuries Help athletes manage on and off-field pressure and anxiety. Apply modern and improvised concepts to enhance physical potential. Work closely with our coaches, equipping them with tools to better support student mental health. Maintain strict professionalism and confidentiality Partner with athletic and performing arts programs to enhance mental wellness performance through mental performance workshops and/or individual counseling focusing on areas of goal setting, visualization, concentration, relaxation and more. Work collaboratively with our team of mental health and medical professionals including the Counseling and Psychological Services team, Director of Health & Wellness, Dean of Students, School Nurses, Learning Center staff, Athletic Trainers and other professionals related to student wellness. Qualifications/Experience/Skills Master's degree in a mental health discipline (e.g. psychology, counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work) Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) or in pursuit of certification; minimum two years of experience in sports psychology/performance consulting. LCSW/LMSW, LPC/-A, LMFT/-A, or licensed Psychologist per CT DPH Regulations. Must be currently licensed by the State of Connecticut or expected to have licensure in 12 months. Experience providing evidence-based counseling support to adolescents Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly the desire and aptitude to work collaboratively in a small professional department Experience collaborating with teachers/coaches/caregivers about normative social-emotional challenges in adolescents Demonstrated understanding of and training in the delivery of culturally competent care. Two years of experience in independent boarding schools or residential colleges is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
